Digital Transformation of Devarattam: A Mobile Application
This application, developed as part of my "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" project, is dedicated to the legacy of Devarattam and its distinguished awardees. Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan—all from Zamin Kodangipatti—have received the Kalaimani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards respectively, for their contributions to Devarattam. This app honors these legends, along with my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the beloved figures of Devarattam. The app's primary purpose is to promote Devarattam and its remarkable artists. It provides detailed information on the dance form and its prominent practitioners.
Devarattam, a traditional folk dance of Tamil Nadu, boasts a rich history. Performed for generations by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, both historically and in the present day, this vibrant dance features a range of steps. While the basic choreography consists of 32 steps, variations can extend the sequence to 72 steps.
Devarattam dancers gracefully execute these steps, each holding a kerchief and adorned with salangai anklets. The performance is accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument.
