This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, boasting a library of timeless classics still seeing re-releases. While these titles challenged Nintendo years ago, they now offer enjoyment across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming, floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Its vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and surprisingly impactful narrative make it a must-have. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, the collection is essential.
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII awakened the Western world to JRPGs, becoming Square Enix's biggest success and a key driver of PlayStation's dominance. While the remake exists, the original FFVII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original stands as a thrilling, GI Joe-esque adventure. Its engaging gameplay makes it a classic, and its PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter series into 3D. While its polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm is undeniable. The vibrant colors, innovative enemy capture mechanic, and creative boss battles create a compelling shooter experience.
To avoid overwhelming the list with Square Enix titles, I'll limit it to this and FFVII. Chrono Cross, while not reaching the heights of Chrono Trigger, offers a unique, visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast. Its soundtrack is legendary.
While I appreciate most Mega Man games, objectivity dictates recommending only a few to newcomers. In the Mega Man X series, X4 stands out for its superior polish and balanced gameplay. The Legacy Collection allows players to judge for themselves.
Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure elements with solid action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it initially seems straightforward but offers a significant challenge.
Though initially a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, sharing creators with Lunar, presents a cheerful adventure contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-influenced RPGs of its time. Its combat system is highly refined.
Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. The original, focusing on tomb raiding over action, arguably represents the franchise's Core Design era at its best. This collection includes the first three games.
A Japanese-only release until recently, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, functioning more as a punk-influenced adventure. While not consistently fun, its unique approach and message are compelling.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments below! Thank you for reading.
