How to Unlock Animals in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

In *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, you can unlock various animals by interacting with them. Each time Naoe or Yasuke pets a cat or dog of a breed they haven't encountered before, that animal becomes available for your Hideout. This includes a diverse range of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens, such as the stray you save in the pre-order DLC quest “Thrown to the Dogs.”

Yasuke has a unique method of unlocking small animals by painting them. You can document rabbits, fox kits, tanukis, and monkeys in the wild, and subsequently add these critters to your Hideout.

For those interested in farm life, various vendors across Japan offer farm animals like oxen and goats for purchase, priced in mon. This provides another avenue to enrich your Hideout with different types of animals.

To add animals to your Hideout, head to the Hiroma and interact with the bench to access the improvement and customization menu. Once inside, switch to build mode and navigate to the wolf icon on the far right of the menu. This section lists all the animal types you've unlocked, categorized into dogs, cats, and “other.”

Choose the animal you wish to add, and you'll be taken to an overhead view of your Hideout. Select an open grid on the map to place your new companion. Keep in mind that animals will roam freely once you return to game mode, so they won't always be in the same spot when you're looking for a cuddle.

Except for the special pup from “Thrown to the Dogs,” you can add multiple instances of the same animal to your Hideout. However, there's a limit to the total number of animals you can have, so plan your menagerie accordingly. You can always remove or replace animals at any time through the build mode by erasing and adding new ones.
