Mastering the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

Nothing quite compares to the thrill of perfectly parrying an enemy attack in an action game, turning their aggression into a devastating counter-offensive. This guide details how to unlock and utilize the parry mechanic in Avowed.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

Before you can parry, you must unlock the ability. Navigate to the "Abilities" menu, then select the "Ranger" tab. The Parry ability is located in the top middle column. To unlock it, allocate an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Once this is done, Parry becomes available.

Parry has three ranks, detailed below:

At player level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

Parrying requires precise timing. Block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue will confirm a successful parry, leaving the enemy momentarily stunned. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying

It's crucial to understand that not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging instead. Furthermore, only certain weapons allow for parrying: single-handed, two-handed weapons (excluding off-hand weapons), and shields (when equipped in the off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.

Benefits of Parrying

Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a defensive technique that simultaneously increases offensive potential. However, it’s best suited for melee builds. Ranged characters might find it less beneficial. Fortunately, respeccing is readily available in Avowed, allowing for easy adjustment if needed.
