In Avowed's opening moments, the Envoy becomes the victim of a shocking assassination. Unraveling the mystery leads you to Ygwulf, your killer. The choice is yours: mercy or vengeance. Should you kill Ygwulf?
Understanding Ygwulf's Motives
After investigating with Kai and Marius in Paradis, you'll uncover Ygwulf's identity as a Paradisan Rebel, a group fiercely resisting Aedyr's influence. As the Emperor's Envoy, you're a prime target. Tracking Ygwulf to his underground hideout requires navigating enemies and platforming challenges; be prepared! Along the way, you might discover documents revealing Ygwulf's remorse and misguided beliefs about his actions. Even without these documents, he'll express regret during your confrontation. He's apologetic but prepared to face the consequences.
The Consequences of Your Choice
Surrendering Ygwulf to the Steel Garrote Inquisitor, Lödwyn, is the least favorable outcome. This results in a brutal, implied death, yielding fewer rewards than other options. Sparing Ygwulf nets you 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra, a modest reward, but his death is inevitable later in the story.
Why Killing Ygwulf is the Best Option
Given his eventual demise, choosing to attack Ygwulf offers the best outcome. The ensuing boss fight provides valuable combat practice. More importantly, defeating Ygwulf yields superior loot: currency, Adra, and the unique Blackwing armor. This armor significantly boosts stealth damage (+30%) and increases crouching movement speed (+25%), proving invaluable throughout the game.
Ygwulf's Lasting Impact (Spoiler Warning)
Despite appearing early in the game, Ygwulf's fate subtly affects Avowed's ending. After the final gameplay section, a narrative sequence reveals the impact of your choices on Eora's Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to bring peace, Ygwulf's death radicalizes the Paradisan Rebellion, ensuring their continued resistance even after the credits roll.
