Atari's iconic 1976 game, Breakout, is getting a modern makeover with Breakout Beyond. This innovative take on the classic brick-breaker retains the familiar paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique sideways scrolling gameplay experience.
Developed by Choice Provisions, the creators of the BIT.TRIP series, Breakout Beyond sees players progressing horizontally from left to right, smashing bricks to rack up impressive combos. As the player's combo meter increases, the visual effects become increasingly spectacular.
Special bricks trigger exciting effects, from powerful explosions to a laser cannon! The game boasts 72 levels, plus an unlockable endless mode with online leaderboards for competitive play. For those who prefer cooperative fun, Breakout Beyond also features local two-player co-op.
Initially planned as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, Atari acquired the project and oversaw its completion.
"We're delighted to bring this fantastic title to our players," stated Atari's senior director of games publishing, Ethan Stearns. "The team recognized its brilliance – retaining the core Breakout gameplay while completely reinventing the formula. Breakout Beyond is a superb addition to the Breakout legacy, and we eagerly anticipate witnessing the incredible combos players will achieve."
The Amico console, originally announced in 2018 with a projected 2020 release, remains unreleased, having faced numerous setbacks and delays. Atari acquired the Intellivision branding and intellectual property rights last year, but not the Amico console itself.
Breakout Beyond is set to launch later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
