Lizzy Caplan reveals the scrapped Gambit movie's unique approach: a 1930s screwball romantic comedy within the superhero genre.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Caplan, who was slated to star opposite Channing Tatum, described the now-canceled Gambit film as possessing "a really cool idea." The project, which had a planned start date, ultimately fell victim to the 2019 Disney-Fox merger, leaving Tatum reportedly "traumatized" by the experience. His subsequent surprise cameo as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine offered a glimmer of hope after years of setbacks.
Caplan confirmed her involvement, stating she'd signed on and met with Tatum extensively. This aligns with 2018 comments by producer Simon Kinberg to IGN, who described the film's intended tone as a "romantic or sex comedy vibe," fitting Gambit's character.
Caplan elaborated on the film's vision: "They wanted to do, like, a '30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world, which would have been really fun." This unique blend of genres would have set the Gambit film apart.
The future of Tatum's Gambit remains uncertain, though Marvel Studios' confirmed introduction of the X-Men into the MCU leaves the door open for possibilities. Last August, Ryan Reynolds' tweet of a high-quality Deadpool & Wolverine scene fueled fan speculation, further igniting interest in Gambit's potential return.
