Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making its VR debut this Spring 2025, exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming, a significant development announced at the Civ World Summit on February 8, 2025.

Immersive Strategy on Meta Quest 3

2K Games and Firaxis Games are bringing the iconic Civilization experience to VR. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for launching Civ VII, stating, "We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!"

Meta's Chris Pruett, Director of Games, highlighted the significance of this release for mixed reality gaming, calling Civ VII VR "a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans." While Civ VII is launching on various platforms including PlayStation consoles, the VR version will be exclusive to Meta's Quest headsets.

Command Table Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR introduces a unique "Command Table" interface. Players can zoom in and out, examining details with tabletop-game-like precision. The experience seamlessly transitions between immersive VR and mixed reality modes, adapting to the player's environment. The game offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer for up to four players using Meta Quest 3/3S headsets. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively responding to player feedback gathered during Civ VII's early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe/Founder's Edition owners). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance intuitiveness and map readability, addressing concerns raised about the game's interface on Steam. Future updates will include community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer and expanded map types. A quality-of-life update in March will focus on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.
