Conquering Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins: A Comprehensive Guide

The game's recurring warnings—"Among men, Lu Bu. Among horses, Red Hare." and "Do not pursue Lu Bu"—clearly indicate Lu Bu's formidable nature. However, if you're up for the challenge, here's how to defeat him.

Should You Even Attempt to Fight Lu Bu?

Fighting Lu Bu is incredibly challenging; it took me over an hour in my playthrough. However, there are compelling reasons to engage him:

  • Bragging Rights: Defeating Lu Bu is a significant accomplishment.
  • Forced Confrontation: If you align with Shu or Wei, a battle with Lu Bu in Chapter 4 (Battle of Xiapi) is unavoidable.
  • Rewards: Victory at Hulao Gate earns you the "The Strongest" trophy. Post-game victory unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd.

Phase 1: Mounted Lu Bu

Before the battle, equip yourself strategically. A multi-hit sword to stagger him is crucial, along with Battle Arts that are quick, wide-ranging, and low-Bravery cost (I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash). Boost your health and defense with accessories like Divine Bird's Wing and Divine Turtle's Shell. A weapon with a skill granting Bravery for Perfect Evades is also beneficial.

Initially, Lu Bu rides Red Hare. He charges rapidly but pauses occasionally. Exploit these pauses to unleash Battle Arts, then retreat. His attacks, excluding Red Hare's aerial dive, have limited area of effect, making evasion relatively straightforward. Once his health reaches 80%, he dismounts, initiating the next phase.

Phase 2: Lu Bu on Foot

Unmounted, Lu Bu becomes even more aggressive. His attacks are swift, and he dashes across the battlefield. A red aura signifies an uninterruptible combo. Evade his charges; a grab attack without his spear is easily dodged.

His most dangerous move is a three-arrow volley preceded by an orange glow. Absconding Slash (or a similar ranged Battle Art) can counter this. Close-range Battle Arts are fatal. Keep your Musou gauge full for invincibility during critical moments.

Lu Bu is surprisingly juggleable in this phase. Sustained attacks quickly recharge Battle Arts and deplete his Fortitude meter. Maintain close proximity for better reaction time. Consistent evasion is key.

Phase 3: Lu Bu's Musou Rage

Once Lu Bu's health is sufficiently low, he enters Musou Rage. He becomes unstaggerable and unleashes relentless attacks. The objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he uses his Musou attack; otherwise, the phase restarts. Utilize all available resources—Musou attacks, Battle Arts, and rapid, powerful strikes—to overcome this final hurdle.

By following these strategies, you can successfully defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, currently available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
