Sandfall Interactive not only shared the release date but also delved into the game's new characters and detailed gameplay mechanics.
The game's full cast has been revealed, expanding the roster to seven fully playable characters and one dedicated to exploration. The newly introduced characters are Monoco and Esquie.
Monoco, the team's "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," is a being that thrives on combat, viewing it as a form of meditation. With the unique ability to transform into defeated enemies, Monoco adds a strategic layer to combat by harnessing the powers of fallen foes. Unaffected by the Paintress' power, Monoco joined the group out of intrigue for future battles.
Esquie, known as the oldest and strongest being in the world, takes a more supportive role. Esquie aids the team by providing access to various locations across the open world map. Players must collect special stones to unlock new abilities and access previously unreachable areas.
The other playable characters, revealed earlier on October 16, 2024, via a YouTube video, include Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso. Despite their differing personalities and motivations, these characters unite to end the cycle of death.
Sandfall Interactive aims to elevate Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 beyond its stunning visuals by revamping classic turn-based RPG combat, as highlighted in an Xbox Wire article dated January 23, 2025.
"We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face," stated CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche. "We wanted it to feel like a real game where every character has a distinct playstyle and can be played in numerous ways, yet each feels unique with their own mechanics and skill tree."
The game introduces a reactive turn-based system, blending real-time elements into combat. Players can dodge enemy attacks or deliver powerful counterstrikes by parrying. Additionally, characters can unleash more potent attacks with precise button inputs. To cater to a wider audience, the game allows adjustments to difficulty settings, making the parry and dodge windows more forgiving at lower levels.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 also boasts extensive character customization. Each character possesses unique mechanics and skill trees, such as Lune’s ability to gather "Stain" to enhance her abilities. Players can gain Luminas, passive effects, by evolving "Pictos," equipment modifiers, after four battles. Once turned into Luminas, these effects become permanent, offering numerous ways to tailor each character's playstyle.
With deep customization options and a fresh take on turn-based combat, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 promises to challenge players' strategic thinking and reflexes, delivering a rich and immersive gaming experience.
