Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3: PS5 Launch Confirmed, Other Platforms to Follow
FF7 Trilogy's Future on PlayStation and Beyond
PlayStation fans can breathe easy! Producers Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed in a January 23, 2025, interview with 4Gamer that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 will launch on the PS5. Addressing concerns stemming from the release history of previous installments, Kitase reassured fans, stating definitively, "No, you can rest assured about the next one (FF7 Remake Part 3)." While the PS5 is nearing the midpoint of its lifecycle, the possibility of a PS6 release before the completion of the FF7 Remake trilogy remains uncertain.
Square Enix remains tight-lipped about the release date. Development, however, began alongside Part 2, with full production accelerating after Part 2's February 2024 release. Leveraging reusable assets and a completed story draft suggests a potentially sooner-than-expected launch.
In a January 23, 2025, Famitsu interview, Hamaguchi offered an encouraging update: "It’s going very well. We started working on the third game right after FFVII Rebirth ended, and we have a build that will confirm what we should aim for as a game by the end of 2024...We are progressing without any delay." Kitase further expressed confidence in the completed story, stating, "At least I'm very satisfied with it, so I'm sure it will be a conclusion that will satisfy the fans as well."
A March 6, 2024, Washington Post report indicated PlayStation secured timed exclusivity for the entire FF7 Remake trilogy. Following the pattern of previous installments (FF7 Remake: one-year PS4 exclusivity; FF7 Remake Intergrade: six-month PS5 exclusivity; FF7 Rebirth: timed PS5 exclusivity before a January 23, 2025, PC release), Part 3 is likely to follow suit with a PS5-exclusive period before launching on other platforms.
Despite the positive reception of the FF7 Remake series and Square Enix's strong PlayStation partnership, declining HD title sales (as reported in their March 31, 2024, financial results) are prompting a shift. The company aims for an "aggressive multiplatform strategy" encompassing Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms to boost sales. This suggests future Square Enix titles, including potential future installments beyond the FF7 Remake trilogy, may see broader releases across various consoles.
