Firaxis Makes Surprise Sid Meier's Civilization 7 - VR Announcement

Firaxis Games is bringing the recently released Civilization VII to virtual reality.

Sid Meier's Civilization VII - VR, the franchise's first foray into VR, will launch Spring 2025 exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets. Developed by PlaySide Studios (known for The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners and Meta Horizon Worlds), this VR adaptation promises a unique experience.

The official description highlights an immersive Command Table interface:

In Civilization VII - VR, the world of Civilization comes alive. The game map unfolds on a Command Table, allowing players to zoom in for intricate details or survey the broader landscape. Interact directly with world leaders, forging alliances or declaring war across the ages.

Play in immersive VR or mixed reality, seamlessly switching between modes. The VR experience places you in an ornate museum overlooking a personalized vista; mixed reality adapts the Command Table to your physical space. Detailed dioramas in The Archives showcase gameplay achievements in both modes. Engage in online multiplayer matches with up to three other players.

The PC and console versions of Civilization VII, currently available through early access, have received mixed reception. Steam reviews highlight concerns about the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features.

Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback, promising UI improvements, cooperative multiplayer teams, and more diverse map types.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, addressed the negative reviews, expressing confidence that the core Civilization audience will appreciate the game with more playtime and describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
