NCSoft Scraps Horizon MMORPG "Project H"
NCSoft's ambitious Horizon MMORPG, internally codenamed "H," has been canceled, according to a January 13, 2025 report by South Korean news outlet MTN. The cancellation follows a company-wide "feasibility review" that also resulted in the termination of other undisclosed projects (codenamed "J"). The report further indicates that key developers working on "Project H" departed NCSoft, with remaining team members reassigned to other projects. The removal of "H" and "J" from NCSoft's organizational chart solidifies their cancellation.
While NCSoft and Sony have yet to officially comment, the news raises questions about the future of the Horizon MMORPG concept. The possibility of another developer picking up the project remains uncertain.
Guerrilla Games' Separate Horizon Online Project Remains Active
Separately, Guerrilla Games continues development on its own Horizon online project, first announced on December 16, 2022. This project, distinct from NCSoft's canceled effort, is envisioned as a multiplayer experience featuring a new cast of characters and a unique visual style. Recent job postings, including one for a Senior Combat Designer in November 2023 and a Senior Platform Engineer in January 2025, suggest a large-scale game targeting over one million players. The ambitious scale and ongoing recruitment efforts point towards a significant investment in this separate title.
Sony and NCSoft's Strategic Partnership
The cancellation of "Project H" comes amidst a newly formed strategic partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and NCSoft, announced November 28, 2023. This collaboration aims to leverage NCSoft's technological expertise and Sony's global reach to expand into new gaming markets. While the future of a Horizon MMORPG remains unclear, this partnership opens doors for potential collaborations on other Sony titles, potentially bringing them to mobile platforms.
