With the Thunderbolts making their live-action debut soon, Marvel Comics is unleashing ambitious plans for the team in print. The current Thunderbolts are heavily involved in the One World Under Doom crossover, but that's just the prelude. A brand-new Thunderbolts team will electrify the scene shortly after the movie's release.
Marvel unveiled New Thunderbolts—a series penned by Sam Humphries (Uncanny X-Force) and illustrated by Ton Lima (West Coast Avengers), with cover art by Stephen Segovia. Check out the striking cover for issue #1 below:
While capitalizing on the film's buzz—with Bucky Barnes leading and a mysterious asterisk in the title—this team boasts a drastically different roster. Prepare for a wild ride with Clea, Wolverine (Laura Kinney), Namor, Hulk, and Carnage (with Eddie Brock as the current Venom) joining the ranks.
The story kicks off with Bucky and Black Widow confronting a universe-threatening crisis: Illuminati doppelgangers. To combat this, they assemble a formidable, albeit volatile, team. Managing this eclectic mix of heroes and villains promises to be anything but easy.
"I love every iteration of Thunderbolts," Humphries shared in Marvel's press release. "I'm thrilled to continue the franchise's tradition of high-octane action, explosive personalities, and surprising twists. This is a gathering of seven of the Marvel Universe's most formidable and unpredictable forces. Assembling a super team is like planning a dinner party—you need the right mix of guests. I envisioned a dangerous, chaotic, and utterly wild Marvel dinner party, and that's what we're serving up."
Lima added, "I'm having a blast collaborating with Mr. Humphries and the team. Look at this lineup—it's insane! They're not here for polite conversation; they dive straight into the action, which is the most fun to draw. None of them are known for taking it easy, and neither am I."
New Thunderbolts #1 explodes onto the scene June 11, 2025.
