Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Minecraft 2 Development
Markus "Notch" Persson, the original creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting a potential sequel. While not a direct confirmation, his recent actions strongly imply a "spiritual successor" to the iconic game is in the works.
Notch recently conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter), presenting two game concepts: a roguelike/dungeon crawler hybrid and a Minecraft-inspired title. The latter option overwhelmingly won, garnering 81.5% of over 287,000 votes. He subsequently confirmed his seriousness, stating he had "basically announced Minecraft 2."
This declaration, however, comes with caveats. Mojang Studios, the current Minecraft developer, and the Minecraft IP are owned by Microsoft. Notch acknowledges this, assuring fans that any new project will avoid infringing on Mojang's work and Microsoft's existing endeavors. He respects their efforts and aims to create a distinct experience.
Notch expressed concerns about the inherent risks of creating a spiritual successor, acknowledging that such projects don't always meet expectations. Despite these reservations, he's motivated by fan demand and the potential for another successful title.
While waiting for Notch's potential Minecraft-inspired game, fans can anticipate related entertainment. Minecraft-themed amusement parks are slated for the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, and a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," is expected later in 2025.
