Genki, a prominent handheld gaming accessory developer, showcased a 3D-printed Nintendo Switch 2 mockup at CES 2025, revealing several key design features. This model, reportedly based on a black market acquisition, accurately reflects the console's dimensions, hinting at a larger form factor approaching the size of Valve's Steam Deck.
Key features observed include magnetically attached Joy-Cons, a second USB-C port, and an intriguing new "C" button of unknown function. Genki CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed the magnetic Joy-Con design in an interview with The Verge, explaining that a release button on each Joy-Con disengages the magnetic connection. Despite the change from sliding rails, the Joy-Cons remain securely attached during gameplay.
Further details emerged regarding the Joy-Con's "mounting channel," which incorporates an optical sensor. This suggests potential functionality as a mouse, a theory supported by recently leaked Switch 2 images showing similar sensors.
While larger than its predecessor, the Switch 2 remains slim enough to physically fit within the existing Switch dock. However, structural differences render it incompatible. The purpose of the additional USB-C port and the "C" button remains a mystery, even to Genki.
