A newly published patent reveals exciting features for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, including rumored mouse functionality. This article delves into the details of the patent and the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
Innovative Joy-Con Functionality: Mouse Support Confirmed?
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) published a Nintendo patent on February 6, 2025, detailing new Joy-Con features for the Switch 2, seemingly confirming speculations about mouse support. This follows the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which hinted at this capability by showing the controller being swiped across a surface.
The patent describes a sensor that detects reflected light from a surface, enabling mouse-like functionality. This sensor is located on either side of the Joy-Con when placed on the surface.
Enhanced Joy-Con Design and Accessories
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons retain the detachable design of their predecessors, but with added mouse functionality. A new charging dock allows simultaneous charging of up to two Joy-Cons. A magnetic attachment, complete with a wrist strap, securely connects the Joy-Cons to the console.
The patent also introduces a novel controller design: a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse operation. These can be combined using a separate attachment.
Important Note: It's crucial to remember that the patent details may not fully represent the final Switch 2 product. Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed these features.
