PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the champion. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising contender.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience shines through in 2K25; major flaws are hard to find. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive roster of real-world courses (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship), the gameplay is undeniably fun. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.
The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Controller users will appreciate the right stick control: pull down to wind up, and push forward to strike. Difficulty settings range from forgiving (Perfect Swing mode) to highly realistic, where precise thumb movements are crucial to avoid slices and hooks. The ability to adjust shot shape (using LB) and lateral tee box positioning adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics further enhance the gameplay experience. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, certainly helped my initial progress.
MyCareer mode receives a significant boost with narrative elements, allowing players to choose between heroic and villainous paths, influencing stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear impacting stats, and skill upgrades are earned through gameplay. Weekly refreshed Quests (like achieving 10 consecutive birdies) add further replayability.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively explored in the demo, allows for reasonable character customization, complemented by skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social interaction, reminiscent of classic golf games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players with varying time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25’s strength lies in its consistent competence across all aspects. While this might not generate explosive excitement, it positions the game as a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing yet engaging experience. A playable demo is currently available, allowing players to experience the game firsthand.
