Allies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Explained

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you can recruit two types of allies. The first type enhances your Hideout with new functions, such as the blacksmith, who allows you to forge and upgrade your equipment. The second type serves as combat companions in the world, equipped with upgradeable abilities that prove useful in various situations.

Once a combat ally joins your cause, you can manage them from the Hideout or any of the kakuregas you've unlocked. When called into action, they will deploy their initial skill and fight alongside you until either they are defeated or all enemies are vanquished. Constructing a dojo in the Hideout not only allows you to level up your allies but also enables you to have two allies equipped simultaneously.

While allies are optional and you could potentially miss them during your story progression, having an extra blade at your side can make all the difference.

Here are the non-combat allies you can recruit through main and side quests:

  • Tomiko – An Unpayable Debt
  • Junjiro – From Spark to Flame
  • Heiji (Blacksmith) – Way of the Blacksmith

These allies enhance your Hideout's capabilities. The following allies can be recruited as combat companions to help you tackle challenges in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Yaya

The Buddhist monk Yaya first appears during the main quest, The Fatherless Monk. She's eager to fight against oppressors but values justice over unnecessary violence, much like Yasuke.

To recruit Yaya, during the Heads Will Roll quest, choose to spare The Wounded, aligning with her values. Then, complete the Find Yaya/The Stray Dogs missions, making choices to convince her to forgive her wayward apprentice and seek forgiveness together. Finally, invite her to join as an ally.

Yaya's combat abilities at each level are:

  • Novice: Joins the fight and performs pushback attacks.
  • Initiate: Knocks down an enemy upon joining the fight.
  • Veteran: Uses a powerful kick to send enemies flying.

Katsuhime

Katsuhime is ideal if you need an ally with ranged attacks. The Koga shinobi is skilled with the Teppo, delivering high damage quickly.

To recruit her, head to Omi and complete the quests Showdown in Sakamoto and Requiem for Rokkaku. Then, undertake the Letter from Katsuhime sidequest, leading to The Diary of Lady Rokkaku. Rescue the target and invite Katsuhime to join your league.

Katsuhime's abilities are:

  • Novice: Deals daze damage upon entering the fight.
  • Initiate: Uses a dazing bomb for an area effect upon entering.
  • Veteran: Teppo shots ricochet to another target if hitting a dazed one.

Gennojo

Gennojo, the sly thief, is first encountered during the Missing Missive quest while locating The Fool. Spare him and continue through the Lost Honor, Sake and Sword, Honor Among Thieves, and Stolen Hearts missions.

Flirt with Gennojo and support his convictions. In The Godless Harvest side quest, prevent him from using explosives and convince him to join your team.

Gennojo's abilities include:

  • Novice: Arrives with a bomb to shock enemies.
  • Initiate: Acts as a distraction, drawing enemy attention.
  • Veteran: Prevents servants from alerting others to your crimes.

Ibuki

In Iga, you'll meet Ibuki, a ronin fighting corruption. Start with the Ambush Interrupted sidequest near Kashiwara Village using Yasuke and follow his questline.

Support Ibuki and, if you choose, romance him. At the end, invite him to join your organization.

Ibuki's abilities are:

  • Novice: Joins the fight and deals impact attacks.
  • Initiate: Shatters the armor of nearby enemies upon joining.
  • Veteran: Frequently shatters the armor of nearby enemies during combat.

Oni-yuri

For an ally focused on disabling rather than killing, Oni-yuri is your choice. Begin her recruitment in Tsuruga, Wakasa, with the Sweet Lies sidequest.

Trust in Oni-yuri throughout her quests, culminating in the decision to let her join your league and hopefully change her ways.

Oni-yuri's abilities include:

  • Novice: Puts an enemy to sleep upon entering combat.
  • Initiate: Releases a poison cloud affecting nearby enemies.
  • Veteran: Delays enemy reinforcements.
