Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) is pushing boundaries and taking on ambitious projects, thanks to Sega's willingness to explore new avenues. Dive into what's next for the Like a Dragon studio!
RGG Studio, renowned for its work on the Like a Dragon series, is currently developing multiple high-profile projects. One of these is an entirely new IP, adding to their already packed schedule with the next Like a Dragon and a Virtua Fighter remake set for 2025. The studio's head and director, Masayoshi Yokoyama, credits Sega's adventurous spirit for these opportunities, highlighting the Japanese game publisher's openness to risk-taking.
In a surprising move, RGG Studio released trailers for two separate projects within the same week in December. At The Game Awards 2025, they unveiled Project Century, a new IP set in Japan during 1915. The following day, Sega's official channel showcased the trailer for the new Virtua Fighter Project, distinct from the upcoming Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster. These projects signify the studio's expansive vision and ambition. With a portfolio filled with well-known IPs, Sega's confidence in RGG Studio's ability to deliver is evident, showcasing a blend of trust and a willingness to venture into uncharted territories.
Yokoyama shared his thoughts on Sega's approach to Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media, "A good aspect of Sega is that it accepts the possibility of failure. It doesn’t just keep pursuing the kind of projects it knows are a safe bet." He further elaborated that this risk-taking is ingrained in Sega's DNA, recalling their early days with the Virtua Fighter IP and how it led to the creation of the action-adventure series Shenmue when Sega asked, "What if we made ‘VF’ into an RPG?"
Despite juggling multiple projects, RGG Studio is committed to maintaining quality. The creator of Virtua Fighter, Yu Suzuki, has expressed his support for the new project. Yokoyama, along with Virtua Fighter Project producer Riichiro Yamada, and their team are determined to deliver a product that meets the high standards set by Sega's iconic IPs, ensuring nothing is "half-baked."
Yamada is enthusiastic about the new Virtua Fighter project, stating, "With the new ‘VF,’ we intend to create something innovative that a wide range of people will find ‘cool and interesting!’ Whether you're a fan of the series or not, we hope you'll look forward to more information. Stay tuned!" Yokoyama echoed this sentiment, encouraging gamers to anticipate both titles with excitement.
