Simu Liu Advocates for Sleeping Dogs Movie Adaptation

The film adaptation of the popular video game Sleeping Dogs, which was officially canceled earlier this month, may have a new lease on life thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. According to a report by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for a movie version of the 2012 game on X/Twitter, expressing his efforts to revive the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu stated, sparking renewed interest in the adaptation.

Originally announced in 2017, the film was set to star Donnie Yen. However, it vanished from the radar a year later, and just weeks ago, Yen confirmed its cancellation. He shared his disappointment, saying, "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights. I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"

Hope for a continuation of the action-packed franchise set in Hong Kong seemed lost until Liu, known for his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, responded to a social media post. It remains to be seen whether Liu will successfully secure the rights and bring the project to fruition.

Sleeping Dogs was released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, and follows the story of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game was well-received, earning an 8/10 from IGN, but despite its success, no sequels were produced.
