While Sonic 3 has outperformed its predecessor, Sonic 2, domestically, it remains significantly behind the reigning champion: The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Mario film's domestic gross of $574,934,330 and global total of $1,359,146,628 represent a seemingly insurmountable lead in the video game movie adaptation category, though upcoming films like the Minecraft movie and the Super Mario Bros. sequel might challenge this record.

Despite this, the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is undeniable, a significant win for Paramount, which has already greenlit Sonic 4.
