Sony Removes Resistance Games from PS5 and PS4 in PS Plus Overhaul

Next month, PlayStation Plus will see the removal of 22 games from its library, including fan favorites like Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, and the last playable versions of Sony's first-party titles Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. This move marks a significant shift in the content available to subscribers.

PlayStation Plus is a comprehensive online gaming service for PlayStation users, offering a range of benefits including free monthly games, limited-time trials, online multiplayer access, and exclusive member discounts. For Extra and Premium members, the service also provides access to a vast catalog of current and classic games, enhancing the gaming experience with a diverse selection of titles.

As highlighted by Push Square, the removal of these 22 games on May 20 will particularly impact the PS Plus Premium library, with the notable exit of two high-profile first-party PS3 games. This is a significant development for gamers who rely on the service for access to older titles.

The departure of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 from the PS Plus Premium library is particularly noteworthy. These titles, developed by Insomniac Games, are no longer available for purchase on the PS Store, making the PS Plus Premium streaming service the last avenue for players to experience them without owning a PS3. Both games were added to the library at the end of 2024, making their removal less than a year later a surprising move.

The Resistance series, an alternate history first-person shooter franchise, was developed by Insomniac following their work on the Ratchet and Clank games. The series saw three releases on the PS3 before Insomniac shifted focus to other projects such as Marvel’s Spider-Man and new Ratchet and Clank titles.

While it's unusual for Sony to remove first-party games from its service, it's not unprecedented. The removal of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon: Forbidden West in August 2024 shocked many, though those games remained purchasable. In contrast, Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 will become completely unavailable on modern consoles following their departure from PS Plus.

Interestingly, Resistance 3 and Resistance: Retribution will continue to be available on the service. Additionally, the PS4 title InFamous: Second Son is also set to leave PS Plus, adding to the list of notable departures.

Insomniac's Resistance series has been inactive for some time. In February, Insomniac founder and outgoing president Ted Price disclosed efforts to develop Resistance 4, which ultimately did not come to fruition. This mirrors the fate of other once-popular franchises like Guerrilla's Killzone series, which have also faded from the spotlight.
