Sony's PS5 Theme Update: Good & Bad News

Sony has announced an update regarding the limited-time classic PlayStation console themes for PS5, covering PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. These beloved themes, featuring iconic imagery and sounds from past generations, will be unavailable starting January 31, 2025. However, Sony assures fans they'll return in the coming months, thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response.

"Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow," Sony stated. "Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead.”

While this is welcome news, Sony also clarified that there are currently no plans to release additional console themes beyond these four. Their statement reads: “While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all.”

This announcement has drawn some disappointment from fans, who have long awaited theme customization options on PS5, a feature present in previous PlayStation iterations. The limited-time themes, released to commemorate PlayStation's 30th anniversary on December 3, 2024, allowed users to personalize their home screens and menus with the distinct visual styles and audio cues of the PSOne, PS2, PS3, and PS4. The PSOne theme featured the classic console in the background; the PS2, its menu shapes; the PS3, its wave background; and the PS4, similar wave patterns. Each theme incorporated the respective console's signature sound effects.
