Splitgate, the “Halo-Meets-Portal” Shooter, Announces Sequel

1047 Games, the developers behind the beloved 2019 multiplayer FPS Splitgate, are back with an exciting sequel. Dive in to discover what's in store with the Sol Splitgate League in Splitgate 2.

Splitgate 2 Launches in 2025

Familiar yet Fresh

On July 18, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2, the eagerly awaited follow-up to their groundbreaking free-to-play shooter from 2019.

CEO Ian Proulx emphasized their vision to "build a game that can last a decade or more." While the original game drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, Proulx noted that "to create a modern game with lasting appeal, we needed to develop a deep and satisfying gameplay loop."

Echoing this sentiment, Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, stated, "we've reimagined our portal mechanics to ensure that both Portal Gods and casual players can enjoy the game without needing to master constant portal use."

While specifics on Splitgate 2's gameplay remain under wraps, the developers have confirmed that the sequel will be built on Unreal Engine 5, remain free-to-play, and introduce a "faction system." Although it retains familiar elements, "Splitgate 2 promises a completely fresh experience compared to its predecessor."

Splitgate 2 is set to launch in 2025 across multiple platforms, including PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Often described as "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter where players can create wormholes to navigate the map swiftly.

The original game gained immense popularity after founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian released a demo that attracted approximately 600,000 downloads in just one month. Its success was so overwhelming that the servers had to be temporarily shut down to increase capacity.

Splitgate remained in early access until its official release on September 15, 2022. At that point, the studio announced a shift in focus to "build the game fans deserve," hinting at "a new game in the Splitgate universe that would introduce revolutionary changes."

New Characters, Maps, Factions

The trailer showcased the Sol Splitgate League and introduced three unique factions designed to enhance the gameplay experience.

According to the game’s Steam page, each faction offers distinct playstyles. Joining Aeros lets you "dash around the battlefield," while choosing Meridian allows you to "control the chaos with tactical and time-manipulating abilities." If you prefer brute force, you can "run in guns blazing with Sabrask’s raw power."

While the specifics of how these factions will influence gameplay are still undisclosed, it's clear that "Splitgate 2 is not a hero shooter" like Overwatch or Valorant.

Fans eager for a glimpse of gameplay will need to wait until Gamescom 2024, from August 21 to 25. However, the trailer has already stirred excitement among the community.

Although most gameplay details are currently confidential, the developers assure that the trailer is "a true representation of what players will experience in Splitgate 2." They confirmed, "yes, those are real maps. Yes, those are real Splitgate 2 weapons. Yes, that is a trail following you out of a portal. And yes, we've brought back dual wielding, a nod to the iconic Halo feature."

Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign. However, for those interested in the game's lore, a mobile companion app will be available. This app allows you to read comics, collect character cards, and more. You can even take a quiz to find out which faction best suits your playstyle.
