Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link has been officially cancelled. Square Enix has discontinued the mobile game, making the announcement today—shocking to some, but not entirely unexpected. This isn’t the first time Square Enix has cancelled a project, so many fans weren’t surprised.
Development on the game began back in 2019, and multiple closed beta tests were conducted on both Android and iOS. In November 2024, the team posted on X about a delay, leaving CBT participants stunned, as the game appeared to be well into development.
According to the developers, despite years of work, they couldn’t find a viable path to deliver a long-term experience that would meet player expectations. The vision was to create a live-service title, but execution fell short of the intended standard.
Missing-Link was meant to be a quirky, GPS-driven spinoff where players would explore the real world and fight Heartless using their Keyblades, set during a forgotten chapter of the Kingdom Hearts story. There was plenty of intrigue around how the GPS mechanics would function.
While Kingdom Hearts is a globally beloved franchise, the concept ultimately didn’t translate well in practice. Rather than release an underdeveloped product, Square Enix decided to pause the project and redirect its focus.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming! --------------------------------------The team’s attention is now fully on Kingdom Hearts IV. After years of silence, Square Enix has finally shared a brief update. The game was first revealed in 2022 during the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event.
Development on Kingdom Hearts IV remains active. If you’re disappointed by the cancellation of Missing-Link, take heart—the main series is still moving forward.
