Nintendo is meticulously evaluating multiple factors as it determines the price of the upcoming Switch 2. While industry analysts have speculated to IGN that the Switch 2 might retail at $400 upon its release later this year, Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the next-generation console's price.

In a recent Q&A session with investors, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed the complex considerations behind the potential pricing. He acknowledged the significant shifts in inflation and exchange rates since the original Nintendo Switch launched in 2017. "We are aware that, in addition to how inflation is currently proceeding, the exchange rate environment has also changed significantly since around the time we launched Nintendo Switch in 2017," Furukawa explained.

Furukawa emphasized the importance of considering consumer expectations regarding price points for Nintendo products. "We also need to consider the price range that consumers expect for Nintendo products. We think a multifaceted consideration of these factors is needed when deciding on the price of a product. I cannot tell you a specific price for Nintendo Switch 2 at this time, but we are taking various factors into account."

It's crucial to consider the context: the original Nintendo Switch debuted at $299.99 and has maintained that price for several years. Now, nearly eight years later, consumer expectations for Nintendo product pricing have shifted. Competitors like Sony and Microsoft have raised prices on their current-generation consoles due to increased costs and inflationary pressures.

Analysts predict a $400 price tag for the Switch 2, a notable increase from the $300 launch price of the original Switch, which Nintendo still holds today outside of promotional offers. The Nintendo Switch OLED model is priced at $350, while the Switch Lite is $200. Although the exact specifications and features of the Switch 2 remain largely undisclosed beyond the initial video reveal, indications suggest a more powerful, larger console, making a $400 price point seem plausible.

Nintendo has scheduled a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, promising a "closer look" at the console following its initial reveal last month. This event will delve deeper into the Switch 2's design, showcase what appears to be Mario Kart 9, and hint at a potential 'mouse' mode for the new Joy-Con controllers.

However, several aspects of the Switch 2 remain shrouded in mystery, such as the function of a new button on the Joy-Con, the console's processing power, and the purpose of its new ports. Nintendo also plans to host Switch 2 hands-on events in various cities globally, offering fans a tangible experience with the new console.

In the meantime, Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that there are no plans to adjust the pricing of the original Nintendo Switch, even with the Switch 2's impending launch. Consumers can thus expect the OG Switch to maintain its current price point.
