Following its global announcement at the last State of Play, Tides of Annihilation has released an extended gameplay trailer, offering a thrilling glimpse into this highly anticipated action title. Dive deeper to explore what this upcoming game has in store.
First unveiled during the recent PlayStation State of Play, the hack-and-slash action-adventure game Tides of Annihilation has sparked even more excitement with its newly released extended gameplay trailer.
The trailer showcases early development footage, featuring protagonist Gwendolyn and her sword-transforming companion, Niniane, navigating the ruins of a devastated, otherworldly London, ravaged by an Outworld invasion. As they journey through crumbling streets, they encounter numerous enemies. It's revealed that Gwendolyn can summon a group of over ten legendary knights, inspired by King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.
After clearing out enemies and further exploration through a magical portal, Gwendolyn and Niniane are thrust into a boss fight against Mordred, a character with opposing goals who is determined to thwart Gwendolyn's plans. This intense battle highlights the game’s dynamic, action-packed combat, underscored by a haunting choir, and concludes the trailer on a high note.
According to Kun Fu, the game's producer, as shared on the PlayStation.Blog, the battle system will offer "intuitive co-op combat in a single-player experience." Players can summon two spectral knights with unique combat roles at a time, requiring strategic decision-making based on the situation. "The interplay between Gwendolyn and the knights creates a dynamic, fast-paced, and deeply engaging combat experience. It’s a system that our team (veterans from top game studios) fell in love with during internal playtests," Fu explained.
Viewers have flooded the trailer's comments with praise for its art direction, style, and the fluid, fast-paced hack-and-slash combat, drawing comparisons to iconic titles like Devil May Cry (DMC) and Bayonetta. Fans also noted similarities with games such as Elden Ring, NieR: Automata, Stellar Blade, and Final Fantasy 16. The excitement is palpable, with many expressing their intent to purchase the game upon release due to its "immense potential."
Tides of Annihilation marks the debut title from Chengdu-based game studio Eclipse Glow Games. It blends Arthurian legend with an alternate modern-day London, casting players as the heroine Gwendolyn, a survivor of an apocalyptic event. While no specific release window has been confirmed, the game is slated for launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
