World of Warcraft is set to enhance its gameplay with Patch 11.1, introducing two exhilarating types of races: the Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and the Skyrocket races, which utilize flying Goblin jetpacks. These races will be featured in the new zone, Undermine, part of the first major content update for World of Warcraft: The War Within.
Patch 11.1, dubbed "Undermined," transports players to Undermine, a vast subterranean city and the bustling capital of the Goblins. Despite its expansive layout, flying is not permitted in this zone. Instead, players will navigate using the D.R.I.V.E. system—a dynamic, customizable car that offers a thrilling alternative to traditional Skyriding, allowing players to race through the city's streets at breakneck speeds. World of Warcraft has confirmed the introduction of Breakneck races, which will maximize the potential of the D.R.I.V.E. system.
In addition to the Breakneck races, Patch 11.1 introduces Skyrocket races, a unique challenge that replaces traditional flying and Skyriding with the use of Goblin jetpacks. These races offer a new movement style that blends elements of existing flight systems. Unlike Steady flight, where players can stop mid-air, or Skyriding, where momentum and altitude can be lost, Skyrocket races maintain constant motion and altitude. According to footage from WoW content creator MrGM on the Public Test Realm, racers gain speed by collecting rings, but this increased speed makes turning less responsive, adding a layer of difficulty to the races.
In the absence of Skyriding in Undermine, the zone will not feature Skyriding races. However, both Breakneck and Skyrocket races will offer achievements for completing races within Bronze, Silver, and Gold time limits. Additionally, reverse versions of all four Skyrocket and D.R.I.V.E. Breakneck races will be available, though there won't be Advanced or Challenge courses like those found in some Skyriding races.

The initial reception to the new Skyrocket races has been mixed. While some players are eager to try them out, others have expressed concerns about the stiffness and unresponsiveness of the flying mechanics compared to Skyriding. Fortunately, as Patch 11.1 is still under development, there is time for further refinement before the update goes live, expected around February.
