'Oscar Can Never Be Horizontal' — Conan O'Brien Reveals the Weird Academy Demands for Oscars Statues in Promos

In a surprising turn of events, former Oscars host Conan O'Brien revealed the Academy's surprisingly rigid rules regarding its iconic statue. On his podcast, "Conan Needs a Friend," O'Brien recounted how his team's proposed promotional ads were rejected due to the Academy's strict guidelines on Oscar's portrayal.

O'Brien pitched a series of ads depicting himself and a nine-foot-tall Oscar statue in a comedic domestic partnership. One idea involved a scene of O'Brien vacuuming while Oscar lay on the couch. The Academy's response? A resounding "No."

"We're fighting about things couples fight about," O'Brien explained. "We wanted to lay Oscar on a couch, and I'd be vacuuming, saying, 'Could you at least lift your feet? Help with the dishes?' They said, 'No, no, no, that can't happen.'"

The Academy's reasoning, according to O'Brien, boils down to some surprisingly strict rules: Oscar can never be horizontal, and must always remain "naked." This meant another idea—Oscar wearing an apron and serving O'Brien leftovers—was also vetoed. While these rules seem arbitrary, the Academy maintains the right to control its iconic imagery.
