Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories both scorching and sweet. I'm feeling a bit wiser, and grateful for sharing that journey with you all. As autumn arrives, I want to express my appreciation – you're the best gaming companions anyone could ask for! Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and some tempting sales. Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's previously unlocalized adventures. This collection expertly builds upon previous storylines, with the second game enhancing the first. Experiencing the cases from the prosecution's perspective offers a fresh take on the familiar gameplay. While the pacing can feel less structured than other Ace Attorney games, the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character make it engaging. If the first game feels a bit slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.

Bonus features include an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed play, and the option to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. A handy dialogue history feature is a welcome addition. The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling dual experience, and the inclusion of the second game, finally localized, is fantastic. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney game is now available on Switch. A must-have for series fans!

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to the obscure NES classic Gimmick! is a surprising treat. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel retains the challenging physics-based platforming of the original. Six lengthy levels will test your skills, but an easier mode is available for those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star attack remains a versatile tool for both combat and puzzle-solving. New collectibles offer customization options, adding replay value.

While not overly long, Gimmick! 2 provides a significant challenge. The adorable visuals and music help offset the frustration of frequent deaths, balanced by generous checkpoints. This sequel successfully builds upon the original without losing its unique identity. Fans of the first game and challenging platformers will find this a rewarding experience. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned – it's just as difficult as its predecessor.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style. While the Switch's hardware might struggle at times, the intense action, rocking soundtrack, and creepy visuals still deliver an enjoyable experience. The weapon system adds depth, requiring skillful management of the main gun, melee weapon, and rotating third weapon to overcome the relentless onslaught of enemies.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's distinct atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids many genre clichés. Performance might be better on other platforms, but the Switch version is still playable and fun.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

This licensed game is clearly aimed at fans of the Umamusume franchise. It delivers plenty of fan service, with strong writing and meta-systems that reward dedicated players. However, for non-fans, the limited number of repetitive mini-games and a story that lacks broader appeal may prove underwhelming. Even for fans, the emphasis on fan service might overshadow the overall gameplay experience.

While the presentation is good, the lack of substantial content beyond the unlockables may lead to quick burnout. Overall, a game that caters heavily to existing fans but offers little for newcomers.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit titles. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized for the first time, a significant achievement. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.

The games themselves are a mixed bag. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are groundbreaking, but they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's Japanese library. A worthwhile purchase for Sunsoft fans and retro gaming enthusiasts.
