The journey of The Wheel of Time on Prime Video has come to an abrupt halt following Amazon's decision to cancel the series after Season 3. According to Deadline, the cancellation came after "lengthy deliberations," with executives appreciating the show but unable to justify its continuation due to financial considerations.
The Wheel of Time is a beloved adaptation of Robert Jordan's extensive fantasy book series, starring Rosamund Pike among others. The first two seasons stirred controversy among fans due to significant deviations from the source material. However, Season 3 managed to win back much of the fanbase, setting the stage for what many hoped would be an even stronger continuation.
The cancellation has left fans disheartened, especially given the vast narrative still left to explore. The series was poised to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Jordan's world. Unfortunately, the high production costs proved too steep for co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios, the latter also responsible for the costly The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
As Deadline reported:
... the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV, sources said.
IGN's review of The Wheel of Time Season 3 awarded it an impressive 8/10, stating, "The Wheel of Time finally achieves its full potential in season 3, which is filled with rich characters finding their place in Robert Jordan’s complex fantasy world."
While the TV adaptation may have ended, fans can look forward to a new 'AAA Open-World RPG' game based on The Wheel of Time. IGN had the opportunity to interview iwot Studios, the rights holder, to learn more about this exciting development.
