Apptoide, the so-called first free App Store for iOS, is now available for free in the EU

Aptoide, the independent app store, is now freely available on iOS for EU users. While claiming to be the first free alternative app store on iOS, the Epic Games Store actually launched first. However, Aptoide might be the first general, third-party storefront.

If you've sought iOS App Store alternatives, your options have been limited due to Apple's tight control. However, following legal battles and the Epic Games Store's iOS arrival, Aptoide has emerged. We previously covered Aptoide's beta in mid-2024, but now all EU iOS users can download it for free.

While Aptoide claims to be the first alternative storefront, the Epic Games Store predates it (in full release). Aptoide's distinction lies in its broader app selection beyond gaming, and its unique feature allowing users to choose specific app versions—a feature previously exclusive to Android users.

Aptoide App Store

Although the above might seem subtly skeptical, Aptoide arguably holds the title of first (especially considering its beta). The Epic Games Store, while third-party, is owned by a major industry player. Aptoide represents a truly independent alternative.

For those following the Epic v Apple case and the subsequent iOS storefront expansion, this is positive news. It will be interesting to see if Aptoide can attract users dissatisfied with Apple's App Store.
