Larian Studios, the creators of the acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, have announced a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. The studio has implemented a media blackout, indicating a significant period of silence regarding future developments.
While Baldur's Gate 3's highly anticipated Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's leadership has confirmed their undivided attention is dedicated to this new endeavor. Swen Vincke, Larian's boss, recently tweeted a reflection on the studio's success with Baldur's Gate 3, hinting at future projects while acknowledging the need for a creative refresh.
In a subsequent statement to VideoGamer, Larian officially declared their commitment to their next title, initiating the aforementioned media blackout.
Details about this new game remain scarce. What we do know is that it will not be a Baldur's Gate sequel, nor will it be another D&D-based title. Instead, Larian is pursuing an entirely original concept, a departure from previous attempts to generate internal excitement for a Baldur's Gate follow-up.
Previous statements from Vincke offer only vague hints. In November 2023, he alluded to the new project's ambition, suggesting it would push creative boundaries. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a future Divinity: Original Sin sequel, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the immediate next project, given the team's need for a creative break after the intensive development of Baldur's Gate 3.
Speculation abounds regarding the nature of Larian's next game. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, a shift to science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a completely new genre remains a distinct possibility. However, it's highly likely that substantial time—potentially years—will pass before any concrete information is revealed.
