Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) enthusiasts have much to celebrate as the game releases its final major update. Patch 8, which hit the servers on April 15, 2025, has significantly increased the game's player count, propelling it just outside of Steam's top 10 most played games. Prior to the update, BG3 maintained around 60,000 concurrent players, but following the patch, that number soared to over 169,000.
Larian Studios, the masterminds behind BG3, have concluded the RPG's epic journey with Patch 8. This update marks the end of major updates for the game, and its release has sparked a resurgence in player interest. On April 22, Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke shared his thoughts on the sudden player increase via Twitter (X), highlighting the robust mod support as a key factor that allows them to shift focus to their next big project. It's been confirmed that Larian will step away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new horizons.
With Larian Studios moving on, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without them. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.
First teased in a November 2024 Steam blog post, Patch 8 has been eagerly anticipated by fans. This final update brings an impressive array of new features, including 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play capabilities, and much more. Larian Studios provided a detailed breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website, which includes an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring the game's polish and playability.
Despite being the last major patch, Larian Studios remains committed to supporting the game's modding community, ensuring that BG3 continues to evolve even after their departure from the franchise.
