Black Beacon has just made its way to mobile devices, and we were lucky enough to dive into this Mythic Sci-Fi Action RPG ahead of most. We're excited to share our impressions with you.

The game begins in the Library of Babel, an expansive and enigmatic structure drawing inspiration from the biblical Tower of Babel and Jorge Luis Borges' short story, which envisions a library containing every conceivable book. You awaken here, puzzled about your arrival, alongside a vibrant cast of characters who share your confusion. It seems you're destined for something great.

Oh, and there's a giant spinning orb set to kill everyone in twenty-four hours. Welcome to your first day as a Seer! Hope you enjoy bookshelves.

Despite the humor, the setting and narrative are intriguingly unconventional. A library filled with nonsensical books, time travel, and numerous mythological nods (we won't spoil too much, but keep an eye on that bird) throw you directly into a deep narrative pool. Being confused is part of the experience, and we believe that's exactly what the developers intended.

Black Beacon offers an engaging ARPG dungeon crawler experience with a customizable camera viewpoint. You can opt for a top-down perspective or a free camera mode, adjusting the view with your other hand. We preferred the latter, but it's all about personal taste.

As you navigate the Library's corridors, the story unfolds in short, episodic segments, each containing multiple maps. Accessing these segments requires energy, but the game is generous with its allocation, allowing ample playtime.

Your journey involves exploring areas, solving puzzles, hunting for hidden treasures, and battling enemies—distorted remnants of people the Library has 'not fully digested'. The combat is enjoyable, fast-paced, and while it can be button-mashy, it remains challenging enough to keep you engaged. Timing is crucial; a perfect dodge grants iframes, and a well-timed heavy attack can interrupt an enemy's move.

The character-swap mechanic adds depth to battles, enabling you to switch characters mid-fight. This tag-team approach allows you to rest tired fighters and bring in fresh ones, even during attacks. Once you master the rhythm, it's quite satisfying... until a mistimed dodge sends you flying down the hallway.

Characters And Weapon Rolls

As a gacha game, Black Beacon features a character and weapon gacha system, where weapons are tailored to specific characters. Both can be leveled up, and while the variety of ingredients can be overwhelming, much of the management can be automated.

You may encounter characters through the gacha before meeting them in the game, which adds variety and fits the game's convoluted time flow narrative.
