Buy Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Before Switch 2 Release

During Nintendo's April Direct, we got a deep dive into all the exciting details about the upcoming Switch 2. While the console's price wasn't a shock, the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch certainly raised some eyebrows. The standout example? Mario Kart World, which will set you back a hefty $80 at launch. Alongside the games, Nintendo is introducing a new range of Switch 2 accessories, which have seen similar price hikes compared to their predecessors. Interestingly, these prices have even increased since the initial announcement.

One accessory that caught my attention was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a steep $85. As someone with multiple Switch Pro controllers already, the thought of needing another was daunting. Thankfully, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will be compatible with the Switch 2, much to my relief.

Not the Switch 2 version. See it at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. While many may opt for the new Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not necessary for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can save your money for new games. For those without a Pro controller and planning to buy the Switch 2, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option at $69.99.

Keep in mind that these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2's release to make way for the new model. Amazon is already experiencing significant stock shortages, offering only third-party alternatives. Besides compatibility with the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has also assured that the original Joy-Con controllers will work with the Switch 2. However, for most games, we recommend sticking with the Switch Pro controller over Joy-Con.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

If the Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're eager to get, you'll have to wait until the console launches on June 5. You can start preordering the new console and its accessories on April 24. Note that the Switch 2 Pro controller will only be compatible with the Switch 2 and not the original Switch.

Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller are already popping up at Walmart and Best Buy, though without a preorder date. Walmart also lists upcoming Switch 2 games you'll soon be able to preorder.
