Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Character Revival in Future Fighting Games
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2, sparking excitement among fans. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto hinted at the possibility, stating that it's "always a possibility" for these characters to reappear in future games.
This renewed interest stems from the upcoming release of the "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics," a remastered collection of classic titles including Marvel vs. Capcom 2. This collection, Matsumoto explained, provides a perfect opportunity to reintroduce the original characters – Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon – to a new generation of players. These characters, absent from most recent iterations except for minor cameos, were originally introduced in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
Matsumoto went on to suggest that their return could extend beyond the Versus series. "If there is enough fan interest," he said, "they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game." He emphasized that the re-release of the classic games aims to increase awareness of these characters and bolster the pool of potential content for future projects.
The "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" itself has been a long time coming, a project in the works for three or four years, requiring extensive collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto also confirmed Capcom's desire to create new Versus series titles and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode.
However, he cautioned that these plans depend on various factors, including scheduling and collaboration with external parties. The immediate focus, he stated, is on re-releasing these classic titles to reignite fan interest and gauge demand for future projects.
The producer's comments leave the door wide open for the return of these iconic characters, making the "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection" more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane but a potential catalyst for exciting future developments in the Capcom fighting game universe.
