The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is poised to unveil its inaugural major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could come "any day." In a recent interview with Business Insider, the team shared their expansive future plans, though details about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps. Willingham emphasized that the development team is diligently working on the project.
Describing the upcoming video game spinoff, Willingham shared, "They'll actually be getting their hand on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria." This suggests an interactive experience where players will have significant influence over the narrative and characters.
Travis Willingham, an actor and one of Critical Role's leading stars, co-founded the company with fellow voice actors Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its launch, Critical Role has evolved into a vast universe of concepts, notably including its successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The forthcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects but won't necessarily be directly linked to them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham revealed that the team was in "active pursuit" of creating a Critical Role video game spinoff, stating they were "starting to come to the end of a long road that we’ve been undertaking for the last couple of years." It's still uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's existing campaigns or introduce a new story within the Critical Role world.
Originally, the Critical Role team anticipated announcing the game by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we approach the third month of 2025, the announcement seems imminent.
Reflecting on their approach, Willingham told Rolling Stone, "Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels. You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s trying to become smarter about it and find out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."
While a release date for the Critical Role video game remains undisclosed, fans can stay engaged by exploring the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4.
