Ex-PlayStation Director Criticizes Sony for Omitting Until Dawn Writers from Movie Credits

A former PlayStation narrative director, Kim MacAskill, has launched a petition urging the creators of the Until Dawn movie to properly credit the game's original writers. As reported by Eurogamer, MacAskill's petition calls on Sony to set a new standard in the gaming industry by revising the credits for the Until Dawn film adaptation.

In her petition, MacAskill expressed frustration over the current credits, which simply state "based on the Sony game," without acknowledging the key developers who crafted the iconic game. She emphasized the years of hard work and dedication these developers invested, arguing that they deserve recognition for their contributions.

MacAskill elaborated on her concerns in a LinkedIn post, drawing a comparison between the Until Dawn movie and HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us. She highlighted how The Last of Us credits both Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann, questioning why similar recognition isn't extended to the Until Dawn team. MacAskill revealed that Sony executives told her the IP she created while salaried at the company would never be credited to her personally, as it was a firm-wide policy.

The petition calls for Sony to revise its approach to crediting IP, particularly in transmedia adaptations. MacAskill suggests providing an executive producer credit or equivalent acknowledgment to honor the creators whose vision and passion have significantly influenced the entertainment industry.

"Let's advocate not only for the Until Dawn creators but for the integrity of the industry," MacAskill wrote, urging supporters to sign the petition and stand with game creators in demanding the recognition they deserve in transmedia narratives.

In other news, it was recently announced that Until Dawn Remastered may be included in the PlayStation Plus games lineup for May 2025. This move could be a promotional effort tied to the release of the Until Dawn movie, which received a lukewarm response with a 5/10 rating from IGN. The review criticized the film for failing to capture the horror game's promise, instead offering a disjointed mix of horror movie tropes.
