FF14 Collab Does Not A FF9 Remake Make, Says Director

Final Fantasy XIV's director, Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P), has addressed speculation linking the recent FFXIV collaboration event with a potential Final Fantasy IX remake. The collaboration, featuring nods to the beloved 1999 RPG, fueled fan theories suggesting it foreshadowed a remake announcement.

Yoshida decisively quashed these rumors, clarifying the collaboration's independent nature. In an interview with JPGames, he explained that FFXIV's design incorporates elements from across the Final Fantasy franchise, with FFIX's inclusion stemming from this "theme park" concept. The timing, he stressed, was unrelated to any hypothetical remake project. He stated that the decision to include FFIX references in FFXIV was not driven by marketing strategies related to a potential remake.

While dismissing the remake connection, Yoshida acknowledged the FFXIV development team's significant affection for FFIX, noting its substantial size and complexity. He highlighted the challenge of incorporating FFIX's essence into a homage without a dedicated remake project. This sentiment resonated with fans who appreciated the FFIX references within Dawntrail.

Although the interview dispelled immediate remake hopes, Yoshida concluded with a supportive message, wishing any team undertaking an FFIX remake the best of luck.

In short, the FFXIV collaboration is a standalone event, and the prospect of a Final Fantasy IX remake remains purely speculative. Fans eagerly awaiting a remake will have to content themselves with the FFXIV references for now, or patiently await future announcements.
