A New Chapter After Fantasian

Following the successful launch of Fantasian Neo Dimension (initially released in 2021), Sakaguchi revealed in an interview with The Verge that he's embarking on a new project. While he initially intended Fantasian to be his final work, the positive experience collaborating with his team changed his mind. He described the new game as a successor to Final Fantasy VI, a "part two of my farewell note," aiming for a blend of classic and innovative elements.

Development Update and Speculation

In a 2024 Famitsu interview, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's progress, estimating approximately two more years until completion. The trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker in June 2024 fueled fan speculation of a Fantasian sequel, although this remains unconfirmed. The new game will likely maintain the fantasy RPG style of his previous works.

Reunion with Square Enix

The December 2024 release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension on multiple platforms (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch) marked a reunion between Mistwalker and Square Enix. This collaboration brought Sakaguchi's initially Apple Arcade exclusive title to a wider audience. He reflected on this partnership, noting the full-circle experience of returning to his roots.

Despite this collaboration, Sakaguchi remains focused on his new project, showing no interest in revisiting the Final Fantasy franchise or past works, stating that he has transitioned from creator to consumer.
