Fortnite Makes Another Big Change to Master Chief Skin

Following community outrage, Fortnite reverses its decision and restores the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin.

Initially, Fortnite announced the Matte Black style would be unavailable, sparking significant backlash from players. This reversal comes during the busy December Fortnite season, which includes Winterfest and the return of popular skins.

The Master Chief skin, a popular addition in 2020, returned to the Item Shop in 2024. However, the December 23rd announcement removing the previously advertised always-unlockable Matte Black style caused considerable controversy. The original 2020 announcement stated that Xbox Series X/S players could unlock this style at any time after purchase. Fortnite has now corrected its error, confirming the Matte Black style remains unlockable as originally intended.

Master Chief's Controversial Return

The initial decision angered fans, with concerns raised about potential FTC violations. This follows a recent $72 million refund issued by the FTC to Fortnite players due to "dark patterns" used by Epic Games. The frustration stemmed from the change impacting both new and existing Master Chief skin owners. Even those who purchased the skin in 2020 were initially prevented from unlocking the Matte Black style.

This isn't the only recent skin controversy. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also divided the community, with some veteran players threatening to leave the game. Currently, some fans are requesting an original (OG) style for those who bought the Master Chief skin at launch, though this seems unlikely. While Epic Games addressed the Matte Black style issue, the addition of an OG style remains improbable.
