11 bit studios has recently unveiled Frostpunk 1886, a highly anticipated remake of the original Frostpunk game, slated for release in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months after the launch of Frostpunk 2. With the first Frostpunk debuting in 2018, the upcoming remake marks nearly a decade since its initial release.

Frostpunk is a unique city-building survival game set in an alternate history of the late 19th century, where players must manage a city amidst a global volcanic winter. The game involves strategic resource management, decision-making for survival, and exploration outside the city for survivors and essential supplies.

IGN's review of the original Frostpunk awarded it a commendable 9/10, praising its innovative blend of thematic ideas and gameplay: “Frostpunk deftly mixes a variety of thematic ideas and gameplay elements into an engaging and unique, if occasionally unintuitive, strategy game.” Meanwhile, Frostpunk 2 received an 8/10, with IGN noting: "Thanks to a ground-up rethinking of its ice-age city builder mechanics, Frostpunk 2's larger scale is less intimate but more socially and politically complex than the original."

11 bit studios has confirmed that it will continue to support Frostpunk 2 with free updates, a console launch, and additional DLCs, while simultaneously working on Frostpunk 1886. The studio transitioned from its proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered both Frostpunk and This War of Mine, to Unreal Engine 5 for the new project. This shift aims to build on the legacy of the original game, providing a solid foundation for future expansions and mod support.

The title Frostpunk 1886 pays homage to a critical moment in the game's universe—the Great Storm's descent upon New London. Far from being just a visual update, Frostpunk 1886 promises new content, mechanics, laws, and an exciting new Purpose path, ensuring a fresh experience even for veteran players. The use of Unreal Engine 5 not only enhances the game's visuals but also enables it to serve as a living platform capable of supporting mods and future DLCs.

11 bit studios envisions a future where both Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 evolve concurrently, offering distinct yet interconnected paths of survival in the unforgiving cold. Alongside these projects, the studio is also developing The Alters, set to launch in June.
