Out May 15### LEGO Mario Kart – Mario & Standard Kart
8$169.99 at LEGO StoreThe set, officially named LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart, falls under the broader LEGO Mario category, hinting at potential future expansions within the Mario Kart subgenre. While smaller playset-scaled Kart sets are available (see at Amazon), there's a clear demand for more large-scale models, such as a Luigi in a Sports Coupe or a Princess Peach on a Cat Cruiser.

Comprising 17 bags, the set splits into two builds: the Standard Kart and Mario himself. The Kart's construction begins with a LEGO Technic mesh, secured by pins and reinforced with bricks, forming the vehicle's floorboard. The body shell components, including rockets/exhaust pipes, side panels, and the steering mechanism, attach via rods and clamps. The steering mechanism is particularly noteworthy, as it elegantly blends form and function. It connects to the front of the set with clamps and folds over the hood like a hinged storm door. Turning the steering wheel directly affects the front wheels, adding a realistic touch to the build.
Despite its seemingly simple appearance, the Kart's construction involves numerous meticulous steps, resulting in a surprisingly sophisticated finished product. This juxtaposition of complexity and playful whimsy makes the build uniquely rewarding.
Following the Kart, you assemble Mario, using a construction method similar to The Mighty Bowser set from three years ago. The process starts with the torso, utilizing ball-and-socket joints at the extremities, followed by the legs, arms, and finally, the head and hat. The hat, featuring two smaller builds to achieve its signature bent look, is the most intricate part of Mario's assembly.
Building Mario allows you to appreciate the finer details that contribute to his iconic appearance, such as the hair peeking out from under his hat, the markings on his gloves, and the rolled-up cuffs of his jeans. This experience is akin to piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of a famous painting, where you discover nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Unfortunately, Mario cannot be detached from the Kart; his torso is anchored directly to a gray plate that connects to the Kart's seat. While this design choice is understandable from a commercial standpoint, it may disappoint some fans hoping for a standalone Mario figure. However, the LEGO community is likely to find creative ways to modify the set for independent display.
Once completed, the Kart can be mounted on a buildable stand that allows for tilting and 360-degree rotation, offering various display options. You can position Mario to grip the steering wheel with one hand while pumping the air with the other, capturing his iconic "Whoo-hoo!" spirit.
If LEGO continues in this direction, fans can look forward to more impressive Mario-themed sets. Following the success of The Mighty Bowser in 2022 and The Piranha Plant in 2003, the Mario & Standard Kart upholds the high standards of build quality and visual appeal. The more large-scale replicas of Mario iconography we see, the better.
