The director of Lies of P, Choi Ji-Won, has expressed enthusiasm about exploring new avenues in game development following his experience with Elden Ring: Nightreign's network test. Here's an in-depth look at the upcoming Overture DLC and what fans can expect.
After participating in Elden Ring: Nightreign's network test, Choi Ji-Won found the experience refreshing and inspiring. Speaking at the 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC), Choi shared his thoughts with Eurogamer about the evolution of the Souls genre. A known admirer of FromSoftware, Choi's influence from these games is evident in Lies of P.
Choi praised the innovative approach of Elden Ring: Nightreign, saying, "I've tried [Nightreign] and it was very refreshing and new. So that obviously gave me the impression that they're good developers, they always push their boundaries, their imagination and vision, and it shows. In turn, that for some reason motivated me to deliver the Overture experience as good as it could be."
This experience has opened Choi to the idea of developing multiplayer games. He stated, "In terms of our future endeavors, we are definitely open to any sort of consideration in the future."
Despite his appreciation for FromSoftware games, Choi emphasized that his inspiration isn't limited to a single title. In an interview with Games Radar+ at the 2025 GDC, he explained, "I'm a fan of many, many types of games, and that variety of different experiences and inspirations that I pick up with many different games I love, I sort of mold it into my own Lies of P experience. In the end, it's a combination of diverse inspirations that I get from many games that I love, and then I'm trying to transform that into a Lies of P experience that I'm developing for the fans of Lies of P now."
Choi revealed that the Overture DLC is expected to take experienced players around 15-20 hours to complete, packed with numerous bosses and content originally intended for the game's launch. He elaborated, "Overture is not a complete separate piece from the base game, and there's a lot of interconnectivity between the two, so developing the expansion was almost like an effort to complete the Lies of P experience, and that was challenging."
Overture serves as a prequel, set in the final days of Krat, where players follow a legendary Stalker. This expansion integrates new ideas, player feedback, and concepts that couldn't be included in the initial release due to production constraints. Choi likened this to a Director's Cut, enhancing the Lies of P experience as if it were the final third of the game.
He noted, "When we released the base game, we had to prioritize, as we mentioned, to do the best quality, so we couldn't deliver everything at once because we wanted to make sure what we can deliver has the best quality." The positive reception from the community after the base game's release motivated the team to include everything they wanted in the expansion.
During an interview with IGN at the 2025 Game Developers Conference, Choi clarified that the Overture DLC does not connect directly to the final cutscene of the base game. While the end of the base game hinted at future directions for the Lies of P universe, Choi confirmed in a Director's Letter video in November 2023 that a sequel is in the works, which might relate to the cutscene. However, details about Lies of P 2 remain under wraps.
Choi assured fans, "What I can certainly tell you is when we share such news or media and assets with you, you'll know for sure that we are ready to present it to you. And that follows very our strict focus on quality [amid] all the pressure that we talked about in the past. So that is the one promise that I can share with you, that when we actually share those contents with you and the news, we will be ready to share that with you."
He encouraged fans to revisit the base game, noting that it contains many hints about the content of the DLC. Choi also mentioned being impressed by some fan theories online, suggesting they were close to the mark.
Lies of P: Overture is slated for release in Summer 2025, without a specific date announced yet. The expansion will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates on the game by checking our latest articles!
