Marvel Rivals Donald Trump Mod Reportedly Banned

Summary

A Donald Trump character mod for the game Marvel Rivals has been removed from Nexus Mods, reportedly due to its sociopolitical nature, violating the platform's established rules. NetEase Games, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has yet to comment on the matter of player-created character modifications.

Launched recently, Marvel Rivals has attracted millions of players globally. The game's hero-shooter format encourages strategic gameplay and unique character interactions. Players have been enhancing their experience with mods, altering character models with skins from Marvel comics and films, and even incorporating models from other games like Fortnite.

A Nexus Mods user created a mod replacing Captain America's model with Donald Trump. This generated online discussion, with some seeking a similar Joe Biden mod for multiplayer matchups. However, the Trump mod (and the Biden mod) has since been removed from Nexus Mods, resulting in an error message when searched.

Reasons for Removal:

Nexus Mods' 2020 policy prohibiting mods related to US sociopolitical issues is cited as the reason for the ban. This policy was implemented around the time of the 2020 US presidential election.

Online reactions were mixed. Many Marvel Rivals players saw the ban as unsurprising, noting the incongruity of Trump's image with Captain America's. Others expressed dissatisfaction with Nexus Mods' stance on political content. This isn't the first instance of Trump-themed video game mods; while many have been removed from Nexus Mods, some remain available for other games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and XCOM 2.

NetEase Games, the game developer, hasn't officially addressed the use of character mods, particularly those featuring controversial figures. The company is currently focused on addressing other issues, such as in-game bugs and resolving wrongful account bans.
