NetEase Games, the developer and publisher behind the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players: continue modding the game at your own risk. The company has made it clear that any form of modification, whether it's cosmetic hero mods or gameplay-enhancing add-ons, breaches the game's terms of service and could result in a permanent ban.
This announcement follows the launch of Season 1 for Marvel Rivals, which not only brought balance changes through hero buffs and nerfs but also introduced two new characters from the Fantastic Four—Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic. Fans can look forward to the arrival of the remaining Fantastic Four members, Human Torch and The Thing, in future updates. Since its debut in December 2024, Marvel Rivals has captivated both Marvel enthusiasts and team shooter aficionados alike, earning a nomination for Online Game of the Year at the DICE Awards 2025, set to be broadcast live from Las Vegas on February 13.
Despite NetEase Games' efforts to curb modding with a hidden deterrent in Season 1, some users have found ways to bypass these measures. A notable workaround, shared on Nexus Mods by a modder named Prafit, allows players to circumvent the asset hash check implemented by NetEase Games. Prafit has cautioned users about the risks associated with using the mod, recommending it only for those with high-end PCs. Following Prafit's release, another mod surfaced on social media, transforming Mister Fantastic into Luffy from One Piece, showcasing the creativity and audacity of the modding community. This Luffy mod was crafted by Ercuallo and highlighted in a video by RivalsLeaks on Twitter.
While it's uncertain whether NetEase Games has enforced bans specifically for modding, the company has firmly reiterated its stance against any modifications, cheats, or hacks. Although some mods, like one featuring US President-elect Donald Trump, have been taken down from Nexus Mods, Prafit's Season 1 workaround remains available, garnering over 500 downloads.
The game has also faced challenges with false bans since its launch, but the message from NetEase Games is unmistakable: modding Marvel Rivals is a violation of the terms of service. As the situation develops, the community awaits NetEase Games' next move in response to these ongoing issues.
