The Warner Bros. platform fighting game, MultiVersus, is set to shut down at the end of Season 5 in May. However, the latest update has introduced sweeping changes to combat speed, sparking a surge of enthusiasm among players and igniting a #SaveMultiVersus movement across social media platforms.
The community eagerly anticipated the launch of the fifth and final season on February 4 at 9 am PT. Developer Player First Games had previously announced the project's closure, promising the addition of DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’ Lola Bunny as the last playable characters. Contrary to expectations of a melancholic farewell, the Season 5 update brought significant enhancements to movement mechanics, resulting in a much faster-paced gameplay experience. This change, long requested by the player base, has come just as the game nears its end.

Players first noticed the accelerated combat after Player First released a Season 5 Combat Changes Preview video on X/Twitter. The update marks a significant departure from the criticized "floaty" gameplay experienced during the MultiVersus beta test in 2022 and even surpasses the speed of the game's relaunch in May of the previous year.
According to the patch notes for the Season 5 update, the increase in combat speed results from reduced hitpause across most attacks. This adjustment enables faster combo execution for all characters, with specific tweaks enhancing the speed of characters like Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, Black Adam, and others through faster aerial attack fall speeds. Garnet's adjustments balance her ringout potential, making her stronger on the ground and weaker in the air.

Season 5 has transformed MultiVersus into an almost entirely new experience, with players reveling in more than just the two new characters. Yet, as Player First finally delivers on long-awaited gameplay improvements, the game is slated to shut down on May 30, ending seasonal content updates and removing it from digital storefronts. Warner Bros. Games will disable online play, leaving only offline modes for players to explore.
Fans are left feeling a mix of shock and powerlessness as MultiVersus achieves its ideal form right before its closure. X user @PJiggles_ described the game as "the most interesting bad game in existence," highlighting its journey from beta to relaunch and the sudden combat speed increase. Professional Super Smash Bros. player Jason Zimmerman (Mew2King) questioned the timing of the speed enhancements in a reply to a Player First post.
On Reddit, a user expressed frustration, stating, "I know everybody's been playing the blame game when there likely isn't a single individual or even group who deserves the entirety of the blame, but man, if this was how the relaunch started off we could’ve really had something. (Apex Legends) is probably one of the worst monetization schemes out there but it lasted so long because it nailed the fundamentals at the start."
Despite the impending shutdown, some players, like Reddit user Desperate_Method4032, have found the Season 5 update transformative, fixing "every issue I had with the game" and enhancing elements like shield animations for a more polished experience. They expressed hope for a potential reversal by Warner Bros., acknowledging the game's newfound potential.
Unfortunately, Player First and Warner Bros. remain committed to their shutdown plan. MultiVersus game director Tony Huynh shared closing thoughts on X, addressing player concerns. Warner Bros. has already disabled real-money transactions and made the Season 5 premium battle pass free for all players as a final gesture.
MultiVersus will cease operations permanently at 9 am PT on May 30. As Warner Bros. moves forward with its shutdown strategy, players are finding solace in creating and sharing memes, cherishing the game that finally met their expectations just before its end.
