Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Compatibility with GameCube Controller, Warns of Potential Issues

Nintendo has addressed compatibility issues with its newly released GameCube controller, revealing potential limitations when using it with modern Nintendo Switch 2 games. The controller was showcased during the recent 60-minute Nintendo Direct, with initial warnings indicating it's designed specifically for "Nintendo GameCube" games available through the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, and not for other Switch 2 titles.

In a clarification, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is optimized for playing GameCube classics. While it might be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players should be aware of potential "issues" due to the absence of certain buttons and features found on newer controllers.

Nintendo has emphasized that the GameCube controller is solely compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 system. In a statement to Nintendo Life, they explained, "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games. Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
